La Casa
The Reason - The Answer

alzheimer's maryland annapolisAs a caregiver for over 15 years for my husband Gene, who passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease on March 13, 2005, I tried many different avenues to care for him. All failed! There had to be a better way, a better place, something, somewhere. I prayed every night that God would give me guidance and direction and, of course, strength to get through the next day -- just the next day.

I was told my expectations of care for my husband were unrealistic. I disagreed.Out of my complete frustration, I decided to open my own facility. I named it La Casa - "the home." La Casa is my answer and hope for others just like me. We organize the components of people, programs, and physical space so that they support - rather than challenge - the person with cognitive impairment.

La Casa focuses on patterns of behavior and causes of problems. We incorporate the use of human interaction (music, hugs, pets, walks, talks, massage). Since many of the symptoms of the dementing illness cannot be treated, the emphasis is on identifying and supporting remaining function.

La Casa is located on three acres of land with beautiful surroundings. The environment is simple, normalized, therapeutic and prosthetic. In this tranquil setting every person is given the individual special care they need.
